Women’s Golf Finishes Runner-up in Conference Tournament

GEORGETOWN, TEXAS - The Southwestern Women's Golf team has finished runner-up in the SCAC conference tournament for the third year in a row since last winning the championship back to back in 2019 and 2018. The Pirates have shown incredible competitive consistency in the tournament throughout the past five seasons. Southwestern came into Riverhill Country Club in Kerrville, Texas, with five top 3 finishes on the season but hadn't finished runner-up since last October at the Alamo City Classic.

The Pirates put together an impressive round as a team to start the tournament. Five of the six players carded 84 or better on the opening day. Isabel Montelongo kicked led the Pirates in the first round with a 77, putting her in solo third place on the leaderboard. Junior Ryleigh Erickson followed Montelongo one shot behind with 78 in a tie for fourth. Linsey Garza shot 83 while her teammates Mikayla Childers and Madison Miller both shot 84 and held at a tie for 13th. At the end of round one, the Pirates held second place with a team score of 322, eight shots behind the first-place leader, Trinity University.

Southwestern played consistently throughout the tournament, shooting a final-round score of 323, just one shot higher than the previous day. Erickson and Montelongo ended in a tie for fourth place overall, both ending with a final score of 160 for the two rounds. Garza improved by five strokes on in the last round and finished in a tie for seventh and a score of 161 (83, 78). Miller rounded out the top ten of the leaderboard with 165 (84, 81), while Childers (84, 87) and Katherine Montgomery (89, 82) both finished in the top 15, shooting 171.

The Pirates concluded the tournament shooting 645 as a team, almost thirty shots clear of third place. Southwestern left with four All-SCAC selections, the most out of any team in the tournament, tied with Trinity. Erickson and Montelongo earned First Team All-SCAC Honors, while Garza and Miller both were awarded Second Team All-SCAC.
