Women's Golf Finishes 18th at Jekyll Island Collegiate

The Pirates began the Jekyll Island Collegiate with a strong first-round shooting 325 as a team. Playing the Indian Mound course in Jekyll Island, Georgia, the Pirates faced a tremendously strong field of teams filled with 13 of the top 25 in the nation along with several other well-ranked teams.


The second round brought many challenges for the Pirates as severe weather moved through the area. The team faced rain, wind, and cold temperatures during the second round. Despite the tough conditions, the Pirates were able to improve their scores from the first day with Ryleigh Erickson leading the team shooting a 4-over 76 improving by 5 strokes. Madison Miller improved by 4 strokes to shoot an 82, Isabella Valenzuela by 3 strokes (81), and Isabel Montelongo improved by 1 stroke (83). This strong performance allowed the team to move up the leaderboard heading into the final round.


The Pirates continued to face difficult conditions into the final round with cold temperatures, strong winds, and wet course conditions. Ryleigh Erickson finished the tournament with an impressive round shooting a 3-over 75 (232 - tied for 29th) leading the pirates to an 18th-place finish out of the competitive field of 24 teams. Isabel Montelongo (248 - tied for 74th) and Madison Miller (249 - tied for 76th) improved from their previous rounds shooting a 9-over 81. Rounding out the team scores for the tournament were Linsey Garza (255 - tied for 96th) and Isabella Valenzuela (265 - 108th).


The Southwestern University Women's Golf Team will compete again on March 27th-28th in Round Rock, TX at the Linda Lowery Invitational.
