Women's Golf Winds Up 3rd In Space City Classic

GEORGETOWN, TEXAS - The Southwestern women's golf team took part in the Space City Classic at Gus Wortham Park Golf Course in Houston, Texas, for their first tournament of the spring season. 

The Pirates strung together a solid first round, highlighted by a 77 (+6) from senior Linsey Garza. The four-scoring Pirates followed in two-stroke increments, with Ryleigh Erickson shooting a 79, Mikayla Childers shooting 81 and the first-year Isabella Valenzuela shooting 83 for a final team score of 320. Senior Madison Miller was in the top 15 after round one, firing 81 on the day. The Pirates overall consistency put them in third place at the conclusion of round one, only ten shots behind the leader, Concordia (TX). 

The Pirates as a unit improved by two strokes from the previous round. Erickson dropped four strokes from the previous day to card a 75, while Isabel Montelongo dropped eleven strokes in the second round to score 76 for Southwestern. Childers stayed consistent throughout her tournament and dropped one stroke for an 80 in her final round.

The Pirates ended the tournament in third place with a final score of 638 over two rounds, nineteen strokes behind the tournament winner, Trinity. 

All in all, Southwestern had four players finish in the top 15, Erickson (5th), Miller (T10), Childers (T12) and Montelongo (T15). 

Both Pirate golf teams will head to Jekyll Island, Georgia, for spring break to compete in the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational from March 17th - 19th.
