Erickson Leads Pirates Against Strong Field

SANDESTIN, Fla.Ryleigh Erickson led a contingent of five Southwestern University women's golfers at the Golfweek Invitational at the Baytowne Golf Club against one of the stiffest fields outside of the national championships.

Of the 24 teams competing in the 54-hole event on the Par-72, 5,601-yard course, 21 were ranked in the top 50 including Southwestern, which comes in at 36th nationally.

The Pirates saw five individual rounds in the 70s including all three from Erickson, who finished the event tied for 27th at 14-over (230).

Erickson's best round of the event was the third round where she started on the 10th hole and used birdies on hole 13, 17 and 18 to take a 2-under into the second half of her round. Erickson finished the event with four birdied include two on the par-5, 410-yard 13th hole.

The four other golfers competing for Southwestern finished within eight strokes of each other as the Pirates carded a 957 overall score, which was good enough for 17th place.

Linsey Garza had the best opening round for the Pirates when she signed her card with a 1-over (73) that included birdied on holes 13 and 17. Garza would finish the event with a 25-over (241) for a tie in 66th position out of the 120 competitors in the field.

Madison Miller (246 – tied for 81st), Katherine Montgomery (245 - tied for 86th) and Isabel Montelongo (249 - tied for 91st) rounded out the rest of the Pirates that too part in the field of talented golfers.

Emory University took home the team and individual medalist honors with a 875 team score and Sharon Mun's 6-under, 210 performance that helped vault the Eagles into first place in this week's Golfstat NCAA DIII Top 25.

Southwestern will close out the fall portion of its schedule when the Pirates travel to Thackerville, Okla., to take part in the two-day Crusader Invitational at the Winstar Resort beginning on Monday, Oct. 24.
