Erickson Cards 9-Over, Leads Pirates to Second-Place Finish

SAN ANTONIO, TexasRyleigh Erickson's 2-day, 9-over par helped lead the Southwestern University women's golf team to a second-place finish in the Alamo City Classic hosted by Trinity University.

The Pirates finished with a team score of 58-over through the 36-hole event at 5,792-yard, par 71 The Quarry Golf Club in San Antonio. Southwestern was just 11 shots behind Trinity for tops among the six teams in the event.

Erickson found herself just two shots back of first round co-leaders Wynter Flores (Texas Lutheran) and Alejandra Sanchez De la Fuente Molino (Trinity).

Erickson, a junior from McAllen, Texas, birdied the par 3, 136-yard hole three on both days en route to four birdies for the event.

Flores would eventually pull out the win with an even par second round and Sanchez De la Fuente Molino shooting a second consecutive 73.

Southwestern's Kaylee Cheek and Madison Miller finished in a four-way tie for sixth with a 13-over. Cheek collected a pair of birdies with one on each day while Miller tallied one on the second day.

Cheek saw a strong improvement from Round 1 to Round 2 going from an 80 to a 75.

Isabel Montelongo (18-over, 12th place tie), Linsey Garza (20-over, 16th place tie), Hailey Vardeman (22-over, 19th place tie), Katherine Montgomery (22-over, 19th place tie) and Isabella Valenzuela (26-over, 24th place) rounded out the remaining five competitors for head coach Greg Sigler's crew that took part in the event.

The Pirates will travel to the Florida panhandle to take part in the prestigious Golfweek Invitational at the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort in Destin, Fla. Tee times have not been announced at this time for the three-day event beginning on Sunday, Oct. 16.
