Women’s Golf Finishes Third, Erickson Earns Third Place

In the first tournament of the 2022 golf season, the women's golf team returned to Vaaler Creek Golf Course, the site where they earned a runner-up finish at the SCAC Championship just five months ago.

The Lady Bulldog Classic contained two top 25 teams, an opportunity for the Pirates to measure up against nationally ranked competition. Mary Hardin-Baylor and Trinity University both sit at 18th and 19th respectively in the September 2nd WGCA Coaches Poll.

At the end of round one, the Pirates sat in solo second place, eleven strokes behind Trinity University. Three Pirates worked their way into the top 10 in the first round. Ryleigh Erickson shot a first-round 79 while Linsey Garza and Madison Miller shot 80 and 81, respectively. Mikayla Childers went +11 for an 83, sitting just outside the top 10, tied for eleventh. Finally, Katherine Montgomery rounded out the top 15 with one stroke behind Childers with 84.

In the final round of the tournament Erickson improved by one stroke, carding 78, to secure third place in the tournament. Linsey Garza was the final Pirate to finish in the top 10, ending in a tie for ninth place, carding an 82 in her second round. The Pirate's performance earned them a third-place finish, twenty-two strokes behind the two nationally ranked first-place finishers, UMHB and Trinity.

Women's golf will have a month of preparation before their next competition. The Pirates will compete in the Trinity Alamo Classic in San Antonio, Texas, on October 10th and 11th.
