Women’s Golf Team Finishes Third at West Region Invitational

Women’s Golf Team Finishes Third at West Region Invitational

Monday morning of the West Region Invitational made for excellent golf weather; mild temperatures and high humidity made for soft greens at Berry Creek. Players could stick it close to the pin comfortably in the first round; however, the greens were tricky early on in the tournament, which made putting challenging for some, but those who were able to putt well in the first round set themselves for a successful tournament.

So. Ryleigh Erickson and Jr. Madison Miller broke the 80 stroke mark in the first found, shooting 79s. Erickson had two birdies, and seven par's in her round, while Miller had a steady twelve pars and one birdie. It was an excellent start for both as they were tied for 5th on the leaderboard by the end of the day.

Fr. Isabel Montelongo rounded out the top 10 for the Pirates on the leaderboard for the first round. Montelongo had six pars and two birdies, and she also would have broken 80 if it wasn't for her only double bogey on hole 18. The Pirates concluded the day totaling 322. By the end of the round, the Pirates were in second place behind the University of Mary-Hardin Baylor and led Concordia University by only one stroke.

Erickson shined in the second round, carding a 77 and being one of four players in the entire field to shoot below 80 that day. Erickson crushed the course for four birdies, and seven par's on her way to securing fourth place overall by the end of the tournament.

Miller completed her final round with an 81, attaining a sixth-place finish and only one shot off from making it into the top five. Montelongo had a steady round again, finishing with two birdies and eight pars. However, a quadruple bogey on her second hole of the day deprived her of a great round. Other notable efforts for the Pirates included Jr. Kaylee Cheek, who totaled 168 for the tournament and tied for 15th, and Jr. Linsey Garza, who finished in solo 14th with 166 over her two rounds.

The Pirates were two strokes away from achieving second place in the West Region, concluding with a team total of 645, only one stroke behind Concordia University. The #24 Women's Golf team will undoubtedly be looking to reclaim a top spot at the upcoming SCAC Championships.

Southwestern Women's golf will be competing in the SCAC Championships at Vaaler Creek in Blanco, Texas, on Monday, April 18th, and Tuesday, April 19th.
