Women’s Golf Achieves Second at the Linda Lowery Invitational

Women’s Golf Achieves Second at the Linda Lowery Invitational

For the second time in March, the 24th ranked Southwestern Women's Golf Team has attained second place in competition. First at the Schreiner Shootout and now at the Linda Lowery Invitational. The Pirates stayed close to home for this one. Hosted by Concordia University (TX); the competition took place at Grey Rock Golf Club in Austin, Texas, just a short drive down from Georgetown. Sunny skies and warm temperatures made for beautiful golf weather on both days at the Linda Lowery. Spring had arrived, and so did the Pirates golf game.

The Pirates secured second position at the end of round one executing a score of 342. Jr. Katherine Montgomery shot the low round for the Pirates on day one with an 84. Montgomery had seven par's and a birdie on the card to put her up in the top ten individually, tied for 7th. Jr. Linsey Garza and So. Ryleigh Erickson followed one shot behind Montgomery, shooting 85 in round one. Erickson had a clean day with nine par's while Garza had an incredible back nine to recover her round with four par's, a birdie, and an eagle.

At the close of round one, the Pirates had four players in the top 10. Erickson and Garza sat tied for 10th and Jr. Kaylee Cheek, playing as an individual, was tied for 7th after her round of 84. The Pirates' performance positioned them in second behind Concordia by the end of the day.

The Pirates were consistent all across the board for round two: Garza, Montgomery, and Fr. Isabel Montelongo all shot 85. Montelongo settled in and was able to improve by five strokes from the previous day, which placed her tied for 20th at the end of the tournament.

Jr. Madison Miller would have the best final round and the lowest score of the tournament for the Pirates with an 84. Miller also showed improvement cutting back four strokes from the previous day. She would card seven par's and a birdie in her final round to place her 15th overall in the field.

Southwestern as a whole improved by three strokes in round two for a score of 339, which was the second best round amongst all of the teams that day. Overall, the Pirates concluded with all five of their team starters in the top 20,  Montgomery tied for 7th, Garza tied for 9th, Erickson tied for 12th, Miller in 15th, and Montelongo tied for 20th. Having all the starters placed in the top 20 was a massive success for the Pirates and their consistent play as a team helped them accomplish their second-place finish at the Linda Lowery Invitational.

The West Region Invitational will take place next Monday, April 4th right on the Pirates home course at Berry Creek Country Club in Georgetown, Texas.
