Women’s Golf Ends Up 14th at Jekyll Island Collegiate

Women’s Golf Ends Up 14th at Jekyll Island Collegiate

The first round in Jekyll Island, Georgia, got off to a solid start for the Pirates. Four out of the five starters for the women broke the 80 stroke mark. Jr. Linsey Garza had the best round of the first day with a 78. But whether it was nerves or getting used to the Indian Mound course, the front nine on the first day gave the Pirates trouble. Each player shot 40 or above in the first nine holes. However, everyone improved by one or more strokes in the final nine, giving the Pirates a bit of momentum going into round two.

Sophomore Ryleigh Erickson had the round of the day for the Pirates on Saturday. She shot dead even with almost a bogey-free round. Erickson went birdie-bogey on holes 13 and 14, then was even on the last four holes of the day to shoot 72. On day two, the women showed a ton of improvement, with four out of the five golfers improving by a stroke or more from the previous day. The Pirates improved two spots from 16th place to 14th at the end of round number two.

On Sunday, the final round proved to be very tough for the Pirates; three of the five golfers shot 80 or above. Erickson, and Garza, who were the best of the tournament for the Pirates, could not improve on or match their previous round. At the conclusion of the Jekyll Island Collegiate, the Pirates held their position and ended in 14th.

After playing in one of the most competitive tournaments in Division III, the Southwestern Women's Golf team should be in good form for their next tournament. The Pirates will stay local next week on March 28th and 29th when they play in the Linda Lowery Invitational at Grey Rock Golf Club in Austin, Texas.
