Women's Golf Finishes 2nd at the Schreiner Shootout

Women's Golf Finishes 2nd at the Schreiner Shootout

Monday morning of the Schreiner Shootout was about as bad of golf weather as there could be, it was cloudy, 40 degrees and wind gusts were 15 miles per hour, making it extremely difficult to put a solid round together. The clubs were cold, the ball was hard and hands were freezing. Every team headed into Comanche Trace knew that the weather would not be suitable for golf, but the Pirates' attitude going into the tournament was the best it could be. The team recognized that in order to place well, they had to be patient and manage the conditions.

The first round on Monday was tough sledding for the entire field with the top 10 scores ranging from 89 to 81. The course played long, the high winds and cold weather knocked down drives and forced incredibly long approach shots to even tighter pins. It would take deliberate golf from the Pirates' in order to come away successful.

Madison Miller showed exceptional poise throughout the tournament as she seemed unbothered by the conditions. Miller had the lowest round on Monday carding 81 to take the first place spot going into Tuesday. Ryleigh Erickson shot 89 to put her in a tie for tenth while Kaylee Cheek carded 87 to tie her for 8th, but it was Fr. Isabel Montelongo who had the second best finish on the team with an 86 to put her in solo seventh place. The Pirates' were able to tough out the first round ending Monday in second place behind Trinity University.

Although the cold temperatures remained, the wind finally died down on Tuesday morning allowing more distance off of the tee and more aggressive approaches. The calmer conditions dramatically helped the Pirates'. Linsey Garza, Katherine Montgomery and Ryleigh Erickson each improved their scores by seven shots or more in the second round, keeping the Pirates' in their spot on the leaderboard. Ericksons' improvement allowed her to finish in the top 10 while Garza was able to move up to twelfth place.

Miller's outstanding first and second days assured her a second place finish at the Shootout. Montelongo also stepped up her game on the final day shooting 82 for a seventh place finish.

The Pirates' showed great toughness and positive attitudes throughout the tournament which undoubtedly guaranteed them a second place finish at the Schreiner Shootout.

The Pirates' Men's and Women's Golf team takes a trip to Georgia to play in the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational, March 16th - 20th.
