OKLAHOMA CITY – The Southwestern University men's and women's swimmers continued what could be arguably the toughest schedule in NCAA-III as the Pirates fell in a close dual with defending NAIA National Champion Oklahoma Baptist Friday evening.
Both Southwestern men and women fell as the Pirate men fell 58-37 to the Bison while the women dropped a 53-42 heartbreaker.
Kyler Wood continued his solid early season performance earning a first place finish in the 100-meters breaststroke. Wood swam to a time of 1:06.47 edging a pair of Bison swimmers by more than one second.
Wood also narrowly missed a second first place finish as he was under half a second behind the leader in the 50-meter freestyle. His time of 24.25 earned a second place finish in the race.
The Pirate men dominated the freestyle events as Tommy Frashier claimed first place finishes in the both the 200-meter and 400-meter freestyle. Frashier edged teammate Oliver Sale in the 200 with a time of 2:04.88 while holding off Ty Lapinski in the 400-meters with a time of 4:26.55.
On the women's side, Southwestern also saw three first place finishes. The first two came from Madison Doty in the 50-meters freestyle as her time of 28.50 bested OBU by half a second while teammate Blythe Nava finished third.
Doty earned her second first place finish in the 100-meter backstroke by dominating the event. Doty was nearly three second better than anyone else in the pool as her time of 1:09.34 won the race.
Makaylee Frederick led a 1-4 finish for the Pirates in the 100-meter freestyle with a time of 1:07.84. Marisa McCormack finished just behind Frederick with a time of 1:08.35 as Mara Weidmann finished third and Payson Puckett rounded out the Pirate top four.
Both Pirate squads continue tough early season action as they travel to SCAC rival Austin College on Saturday. Action from Sherman is set for an 11 a.m. start.
