Pirates Rally Late but Fall Short In Home Opener

GEORGETOWN, Texas - Southwestern baseball dropped their season and home opener on Friday evening, falling to Schreiner University 9-7.

The Schreiner Mountaineers got off to a quick start, but Southwestern made it an interesting game later in the innings.

In the top of the 1st inning, Whitehead and Jaeger scored, in which Garcia had 2 RBI's. The Pirates then tied it up in the bottom half of the inning, starting with Will Burks reaching when the pitcher hit him. Burks advanced to third on Colton Shea's single to center field. Lynch drove in Burks on a slow roller to short to give the Pirates their first run of the game. Shea then tied the game 2-2 on a passed ball.

Schreiner then began to pull away in the next three innings with a 6-0 run between the 2nd and 4th innings.

The Pirates then responded with a 5-0 run between the bottom 5th and 7th innings. In the 5th inning, there were two wild pitches, which allowed Dillon O'Dell score. Jay Sterling singled to center field, which led to 2 RBI's, driving in Cruz Luna and Colten Shea. In the 7th inning, Josh Presnall reached on a fielder's choice, and then advanced to second on an error. Lynch advanced to the third on the same play and then scored on Lynch's singled to center, making the score 8-7.

However, the Mountaineers sealed the victory in the top of the 8th inning when Garcia doubled to left field to drive in Whitehead and moving the score to 9-7.

Southwestern had one final push in the bottom of the ninth that fell just short. A single by Lynch followed by a walk to Presnall and single by Jay Sterling, loaded the bases for Lance Gottardy with one out. Gottardy popped up and pinch hitter Jeff Glasgow struck out to strand the runners and end the game.

Sterling went 3-5 with 3 RBI's on the evening while Lynch posted a two-hit game in the loss. Southwestern's Matt Litz garnered the loss to start out 0-1 on the year while Schreiner's Barnett earned the win and Stewart the save.

Schreiner now opens up their season 1-0, and the Pirates fall to 0-1. Southwestern however, will get two chances tomorrow to get a win as the two teams square off in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
