Men Third, Women Fifth at UIW Cross Country Relay

Southwestern's men's and women's cross country teams opened their season with the University of Incarnate Word XC Relays this weekend, coming away with a promising finish for the men's team.

The 5K course was hosted at Live Oak City Park in San Antonio. Division II host Incarnate Word placed first and second in the men's and women's races respectively, trading finishes with regional rival Trinity University, who placed second and first.

Junior Josh Gideon was the first Southwestern runner to cross the finish line in 16th place with a time of 17:52, leading the team to a third place finish. Gideon was immediately followed by Ben Sloan, at 17:56. Addison English (18:06, 21st place), Allen Smith (18:06, 22nd place) and Sebastian Winkler (18:14, 23rd place) rounded out the scoring runners for the team.

For the women, junior Tami Warner brought home the top place in either race for Southwestern in sixth with a time of 20:29. The Pirates also placed Kristin Lahaie (22:19, 17th place), Kelly Parmet (25:04, 32nd place), Dianna Urrego (25:09, 34th place) and Caitlin Buck (28:54, 43rd place). The women's team finish in fifth place overall.

Southwestern cross country will continue its season on September 6 at the Texas State Invitational in San Marcos, Texas.
