MEN'S TENNIS DEFEATS CENTRE 5-4

Southwestern University's men's and women's tennis teams battled against conference foe Centre on Saturday in Georgia. The men took the match 5-4 while the women fell 9-0.

The men set the stage for the victory by winning all three doubles matches on the afternoon. Lam/Prince defeated Newstadt/Freeman 8-4, Esquivel/Parker defeated Deal/Hage 8-4 and Guinn/Ferry defeated Roberts/Fitch 9-7.

The doubles win put the Pirates up 3-0 going into singles action and needing just two singles victories to win. First-year Alex Lam easily handled Centre's Freeman in the second flight. Lam allowed only two games in the match winning 6-2, 6-0. Junior Charles Prince wrapped up the victory for Southwestern by beating Meredith 6-2, 6-4.

In women's action, the Pirates narrowly fell in all doubles matches, each team losing 8-6.The tone would continue in singles play as the Pirates were barely edged out in most singles matches.

The Pirates return to action after spring break at Austin College in Sherman, Texas on March 27.
