Pirates Conclude SCAC Championships in Fifth and Ninth

The SU men's and women's swimming and diving teams posted fifth and ninth place showing at the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships that concluded on Saturday (Feb. 16) in Southlake, TX.

For the women, it was the team's best finish since 2003 when the Pirates took fourth.

First-year Bailey Thompson (Garland, TX/Garland HS) posted a second-place finish in the 200 yard backstroke with a time of 2:09.61, less than a second behind DePauw's Katie Doogan. Thompson also swam the last leg of the 400 yard freestyle relay, teaming with Jessie Carrier (Victoria, TX/St. Joseph HS), Michelle Comerota (Missouri City, TX/Hightower HS) and Sam Kessler (Austin, TX/Westwood HS) to place sixth with a time of 3:46.14.

Junior Alana Bergfield (Dhahran, Saudi Arabia/The Cranbrook School) posted a third-place time of 2:29.22 in the 200 yard breaststroke finals with first-year Kassie Krusely (Round Rock, TX/Round Rock HS) coming in 12th. Carrier finished the 100 yard freestyle in 54.75 to take home fifth place while Comerota finished 15th. Kessler, meanwhile, finished the 200 yard butterfly in 2:17.43 for a seventh-place showing.

For the men, sophomore Jon LaRochelle (Angleton, TX/Milton Academy) had a 14-place showing in the 200 yard breaststroke. The men's team of John Prater (Austin, TX/Star Charter Academy), Taylor Steele (Houston, TX/Cypress Ridge HS), Rit Fetherston (Tempe, AZ/Marcos De Niza HS) and Kyle Marshall (Port Lavaca, TX/Calhoun HS) placed eighth in the 400 yard freestyle relay.
