Randolph M. "Med" Medley was the distinguished Athletic Director, Chair of the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation and Head Coach at Southwestern University from 1939 - 1969. His success as a Head Football Coach was most evident when he led the Pirates to national acclaim with two Sun Bowl victories on January 1, 1944 and January 1, 1945. Coach Med, as he was known throughout the University community, also demonstrated his coaching expertise in basketball as he led Southwestern University to several Texas Conference championship teams. For 30 years he inspired his teams to victorious seasons and, together with his spouse, Oneita, affectionately known as Mrs. Med, passed along high standards to the student-athletes with whom he came in contact.

He received many honors during his distinguished career, including being honored as "Mr. Homecoming" in 1968 by the Southwestern University Alumni Association. Also, in January 1984, he was posthumously inducted into the McMurry College Hall of Honor for his 16 years of outstanding leadership to that institution. After Coach Medley's death in October 1979, friends and former athletes joined to establish the Medley Memorial Room currently located in Southwestern's Corbin J. Robertson Center.
