About the Southwestern Pirates Athletic Department

Southwestern University fields 20 varsity NCAA Division III squads with 17 competing in the Southern Collegiete Athletic Conference (SCAC). Men's and women's lacrosse are independant and the football team is an affiliate member of the American Southwest Conference (ASC).

The Pirates have claimed 21 team conference championships and seven individual titles since joining the SCAC in 1993.

Student-Athlete Success

  • Student-athletes consistently have an average GPA above a 3.0
  • In the 2014-15 academic year, 325 male athletes competed in 10 sports; 176 female athletes in 10 sports
  • Student-athletes comprise 33% of the student population (501 of 1516 in 2014-15)
  • Student-athletes continue to graduate at a higher rate than non-athletes (statistics compiled from 1994-2009)
  • Athletes receiving academic distinction: Fall 2014: 240, Spring 2015: 226
