Volleyball sweeps day two of SCAC action

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - With a 3-0 win over Texas Lutheran and 3-1 win over Schreiner, Southwestern volleyball improved to 8-2 in the SCAC. 

Southwestern opened the day against Texas Lutheran and quickly took control of the match. TLU did hit .200 in the first set, but the Pirates did one better with a .270 attack percentage to win 25-22.

The Pirates rolled on with a .229 attack percentage in the second set and their defense got stronger as well, holding TLU to .196 for the 25-20 set two win.

Southwestern's offense struggled in set three, but their defense was sharp as a tack, keeping the Bulldogs to a -.194 attack percentage to win the set 25-12 and match 3-0.

Macey Pool led with nine kills while Olivia Drummond added in seven along with a team high four aces. Kirby Kincannon posted six blocks to lead SU who had 14 blocks as a team.

For their final match of the weekend, Southwestern faced off with Schreiner and easily handled the first set, 25-14. Schreiner opened the second set on a hot-streak, however, leading 3-0 to open the set. Southwestern wasn't able to close the gap as the game rolled to 13-10 and then Schreiner's Lauren McQueen served eight straight points to give the Mountaineers a huge 11 point lead, 22-11. The Pirates were unable to recover in the set as they fell 25-13.

After getting refocused, Southwestern returned to their winning ways, opening the third set on a 4-0 run to cruise to the 25-17 win in the third.

The Pirates continued strong in the fourth and Andie Alford served four straight to put SU up 10-3 and Southwestern never looked back as they won in dominating fashion 25-6.

Kaitlyn Foster led in match two with 14 kills and Pool added 12. Nikki Welch posted 34 assists and Kaitlyn Corbett 15 digs.

Southwestern improves to 15-8 overall and has a much deserved week off this coming weekend before returning to action at home on Tuesday to face St. Thomas (TX) at 6:00 pm.
