Southwestern splits final day at Trinity Invite

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Southwestern fell 3-1 to #18 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, but responded with a dominant 3-0 win over Linfield to close the Trinity Invite.

SU got off to a good start, winning the first set 25-19. The attack was the difference maker as the Pirates hit .238 and held CMS to .170 in the opening frame.

From that point on, CMS slowly began to control the game. CMS took an early lead in match two and never trailed as the handed Southwestern a 25-21 loss in the second set, and secured a 25-23 win in the third set. With all the momentum on their side, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps closed out the fourth and final set with five unanswered points, winning 25-19.

Abbie Robb led Southwestern offensively with 11 kills with Olivia Drummond and Kaitlyn Foster adding nine each. Chandler Lentz had a team high 22 digs.

Southwestern was never really threatened in match two, winning 25-17, 25-18, 25-21 over Linfield. SU was just under .300 for their attack percentage and was led by Kirby Kincannon's 11 kills. Kate Mitchell posted four blocks in the win and Forster led with 16 digs.

Olivia Drummond was named to the All-Tournament team after her strong play on both offense and defense. Drummond posted a .333 attacker percentage with 25 kills on 57 attempts with six errors to go along with five blocks.

Southwestern moves to 7-5 on the year as they come home for the first time this season for their next contest. SU will play host to the first SCAC Crossover beginning on Friday. The Pirates at scheduled to face nationally-ranked Trinity on Friday night at 6 pm to kick off their conference schedule.
