Three Pirates Receive All-South Region Honors

Senior Christina Nicholls (pictured, middle) and junior Rachel Thibodeau (pictured, right) were selected to the AVCA All-South Region First Team while Lindsay Thompson (pictured, left) earned Honorable Mention honors for the Southwestern Pirates.

Nicholls honors continue to pile on, and deservedly so, as she led the Pirates to a 30-4 overall record in her senior season. She ranks 16th in the nation in assists per set, averaging 10.64 per set which is also tops for the Pirates while being second on the team in aces (30) and fifth in blocks (56). Nicholls was selected as SCAC Player-of-the-Year and First Team All-SCAC selection after leading the conference in assists and was named as the national Division III Player-of-the-Week by D3VB on November 2nd.

Thibodeau has always been a big offensive threat but saw her role increased as the season progressed, rising to the challenge and is a large reason Southwestern ended the year 18th in the nation in kills per set (13.06). She averaged three kills per set, 8th in the SCAC, and led Southwestern in kills with 351 on the season. Thibodeau was a strong all-around player for SU as she was third on the team in assists (24), first in aces (31) and second in digs (461).

Thompson, the strong attacker and blocker for the Pirates, was held to limited action this season due to injury, but still managed to post impressive numbers. She was second in the SCAC in blocks, averaging 1.33 per set, which led Southwestern and aided SU in a top 25 blocks per set ranking. Thompson was fifth on the team in kills with 180 and led in total blocks with 108.

Southwestern closed out the season at the NCAA Championships, their tenth appearance and seventh consecutive trip to the big dance. They fell to Chapman 3-1 in the first round to close out their season with a 30-4 overall record.
