Pirates Set New School Records and Personal Bests at Incarnate Word Spring Break Invite

SAN ANTONIO – The Southwestern University Pirates men's and women's track and field teams sent a small contingent of athletes to compete in the field events at the University of Incarnate Word Spring Break Invitational on Thursday.

JaeLynn Stewart broke Southwestern University's women's shot put record with a throw of 11.77m, finishing fourth overall and first among all DIII athletes competing. Erin Toro and Hanna Bruce also competed in the event, finishing sixth and eighth with distances of 10.70m and 9.11m.

In the javelin throw, Morgan Gilpin also finished third overall and first among DIII competitors with a mark of 31.12m. Erin Toro finished sixth with a season-opener of 27.99m.

Jaye Ashley competed in the long jump with a distance of 4.92m, finishing 11th. Bruce and Torro finished ninth and 13th in the hammer throw with distances of 39.52 and 30.66m.

On the men's side, Devin Rosas set a personal best in the long jump with a distance of 6.74m for a fourth-place finish. In the shot put, Sam Grubbs and Mike May finished seventh and eighth with distances of 12.07m and 11.04m. Grubbs also competed in the hammer throw with a mark of 42.62m, finishing sixth.

The men's team will hit the road on Friday, March 22 to compete in The Island Meet in Gulf Shores, Alabama. They will compete in the Texas State Bobcat Meet in San Marcos, Texas from March 28-31. The women will travel to Abilene, Texas on Friday, March 23 to compete against McMurry and back to San Antonio to compete at Trinity on March 30.
