GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Southwestern University women's tennis team earned a hard-fought victory over the Schreiner University Mountaineers this Saturday evening.

In doubles, Nina Elez and Nina Mitrofanova fell short to Jennifer Garcia and Victoria Morales, losing 6-8 at the No.1 spot. Esther Bowers and Emma Kesterson bested Katelyn Ruiz and Blair Drought-Villarreal 8-0 playing at the No. 2 spot. At the same time, Alli Ziehm and Mariana Quetzeri beat Rachel Rompel and Lindsey Reynolds 8-0 at the No. 3 spot.

In singles, Mitrofanova played at the No. 2 spot and swept Morales 6-0, 6-0, and Kesterson easily bested Villarreal 6-1, 6-0 playing at the No. 3 spot.

"Nina M struggled in doubles big time but reset for singles and brought it. Emma's energy continues to remain outstanding and the girls fed off of it," said Head Coach Billy Porter. Elez defeated Rompel 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 4 spot, while Taylor Despriet bested Ruiz 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 5.

Playing at No. 1 and No. 6 spot, Bowers and Sydney Wahl could not finish their matches.

"Esther was in a battle in singles and it was unfortunate that she couldn't finish, especially being in her hometown. She competed so much better today than she has all season," Porter said.

Southwestern women's tennis improves 2-1 in the season. The Pirates now get ready for a quick turnaround as they travel to San Marcos to play the Texas State Bobcats on Sunday, February 28 at 2 p.m.
