Women's Tennis Falls To St. Mary's

SAN ANTONIO — Southwestern women's tennis played some hard-fought matches but fell 7-0 to NCAA Division II St. Mary's University.

The Pirates were competitive in doubles, picking up a 6-4 win from Mariana Quetzeri and Alli Ziehm in No. 3 doubles. Nina Mitrofanova and Nina Elez held a 5-2 lead over Maria Garcia and Marina Vigil in No. 1 doubles but fell 7-5 to give St. Mary's the lone doubles point, per Division II scoring rules.

"Alli and Mariana were rock solid at three and put together a nice win," head coach Billy Porter said. "Nina and Nina were up 5-2 and just couldn't close it out, which was the difference of us losing the doubles point."

Southwestern dropped five of the six matches in straight sets, with Taylor Despriet taking Abigail Csengery to three sets in No. 5 singles.

"Taylor had her second tough 10 point breaker loss in three matches," Porter said. "She's playing darn good tennis for us regardless."

Southwestern falls to 1-1 with the loss. The Pirates will return home to host Schreiner on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
