Ojai, Calif. – The Southwestern University Pirates women's tennis team opened Day 1 of the Ojai Tennis Tournament with a strong showing.
No. 6 Esther Bowers advanced to the quarterfinals, defeating UCSC's Savana McDowell (6-3, 6-0) in the opening round and Chapman's Vasilisa Trofimova (6-4, 6-4) in the Round of 16 before falling to Trinity's Mary Kaffen (7-6, 6-1) in the quarterfinals.
Teammate Mariana Quetzeri defeated USCS' Ines Pelvang (6-4, 6-1) in the opening round before being bested by Caltech's Kana Moriyama in three sets (4-6, 6-0, 6-2).
In doubles, the pair made it to Day 2, advancing to the semifinals after defeating CLU's Brennan Foreman and Carolina Groff Hinojosa (6-3, 6-2). They then beat CLU's Christie Kurys and JoAnn Taylor (6-2, 6-1 and will face Caltech's Kana Moriyama and Anna Titrea tomorrow at 2:00 p.m.
