Depth Shines for Women's Tennis Against Centenary

SHREVEPORT, La. – The Southwestern University Pirates women's tennis team got contributions from throughout its roster in a 9-0 victory over the Centenary Ladies.

Southwestern plowed through doubles in three consecutive shutout victories with Esther Bowers and Sara Le defeating Alyssa Davis and Grace Doucet in the No. 1 spot, Mary Cardone and Stephanie Bartusove besting Brianna Serret and Shyann Pisano in the No. 2 spot, and Nina Elez and Isabel Candelario picking up the win at No. 3.

"I thought the women really stepped up being down two starters," Head Coach Billy Porter said. "Our depth really came through today."

The Pirates turned to Elez in the top spot for singles, getting a pair of 6-0 victories. Meeshti Shethia, Chandler Vrba, and Bartusov each won 6-1, 6-0 in straight sets in the two, three, and four spots while Le and Candelario also picked up victories in straight sets.

"Isabel had herself quite the day, getting another win in singles and her first ever double win," Porter said. "And I thought Chandler served really well and dictated well off of her forehand."

With the win, the Pirates improve to 15-2 this season. Southwestern will host Mary Hardin-Baylor on Friday, April 15 at 5:00 p.m.
