Pirates Defeat No. 28 Gustavus Adolphus in Blue-Grey Invitational Opener

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Southwestern University Pirate women's tennis team defeated No. 28-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College 7-2 in its first match at the Blue-Grey Invitational.

Southwestern University started sluggish, dropping two of the first three sets in doubles competition with Mary Cardone and Mariana Quetzeri getting the lone Pirates' win over Simona Potockova and Hannah Borgh in the No. 2 spot.

The Pirates recovered in singles with Cecile Wilde and Meeshti Shethia each winning in straight sets in the five and six spots. The momentum carried the Pirates through the rest of the match, with Southwestern winning the No. 1-4 spots in three sets each.

"I'm extremely proud of our women tonight, finishing 7-2 against a very tough No. 28-ranked Gustavus Adolphus team," Assistant Coach Christine Miller said. "There were some very emotional ups and downs but were able to regroup and reset after doubles and persevere."
