Pirates blank Yellowjackets in home opener

Southwestern hosted Howard Payne to open their home season on Friday and defended their court with a pair of 9-0 wins.

The men easily rolled through doubles action with Niko Snovely/Grant Gideon winning 8-3 in #1 doubles and #2 Will Ellis/Rod Khansari and #3 Sam McCready/Nick Framen cruising to 8-0 wins.

The women had a tougher challenge but rose to the occasion. Julie Swets/Emilie Moeller need a tie breaker set to defeat Marlin/Walker in #1 doubles 9-8 (5). Nicole Wilson/Kali Rose pulled out an 8-6 win in #2 doubles and Virginia Stofer/Maranda Kahl won 8-3 in #3 doubles.

In singles action, Marieke Visser won 6-3, 4-6, 10-8 in #1 singles while Swets won in the #2 slot in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. Emilie Moeller dropped her first set in #3 singles 2-6 before rallying to take the match 6-1, 10-5.

Nicole Wilson dominated in #4 singles with an easy 6-0, 6-0 win over Hunt. Kali Rose defeated Tiffany Bullock 6-2, 6-0 and Virginia Stofer made quick work of Mendelson in #6 singles, winning 6-1, 6-0.

On the men's side Ellis won 6-2, 6-3 in #1 singles and Khansari defeated Lambert 6-1, 6-1 in #2 singles. David Strong took down McIntosh 6-2, 6-0 while Trevor Searle defeated Sostarich 6-2, 6-1. Garcia easily handled Tyson 6-1, 6-3 in #4 singles and Alvaro Rojas dominated Goodwin in the #6 slot 6-0, 6-0.

The men remain undefeated in match play at 3-0 on the year while the women improve to 2-1. They remain at home for a pair of tough matches on Saturday, facing University of the Southwest at 9am and Mary Hardin-Baylor at 5pm.
