Pirate women open championships as No. 2 seed

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- The Southwestern University women's tennis team finished an impressive regular season and earned the No. 2 seed for the upcoming SCAC Women's Tennis Championships set to begin Friday, April 25 in San Antonio the league office announced.

Southwestern is looking to knock off defending league champion Trinity after falling in last year's title match, 8-1. The Pirates and Tigers did not meet in the regular season although Southwestern finished 5-0 against SCAC opponents.

Gabby Hunt and Marieke Visser have been solid in the middle of the lineup for the Pirates as Hunt posted a 9-3 record at No. 2 singles. Visser stands at 9-3 in singles after going 7-2 at the No. 4 position and 2-0 at the No. 5 position.

Virginia Stofer has also been an important piece to the Pirates success this season playing primarily at No. 6 singles where she posted a 10-1 record. Stofer brings a six match winning streak into the weekend's tournament as well.

Visser also teamed with Heba Abdul during doubles action and the tandem carry a 9-3 mark into the postseason tournament. Visser and Abdul played at No. 3 doubles and have currently won their last five matches.  

Trinity is again the No. 1 seed and received a first-round bye.

Saturday, April 26
Match 4: 2 p.m. - #1 Trinity vs. Winner Match 1
Match 5: 2 p.m. - Winner Match 2 vs. Winner Match 3
Match 6: 8 a.m. - Loser Match 2 vs. Loser Match
Match 7: 2 p.m. - Loser Match 1 vs. Winner Match 6 (5th Place Match)

Sunday, April 27
Match 8: 8 a.m. - Winner Match 4 vs. Winner Match 5 (SCAC Championship)
Match 9: 8 a.m. - Loser Match 4 vs. Loser Match 5 (3rd Place Match)
