The Southwestern women's tennis team traveled to Tyler this past weekend to compete in their first competition of the year, the ITA Southwest Regional Championships. The tournament was punctuated by heavy rains on Friday. Conditions ultimately forced a postponement, relocation, and late completion of a number of matches on the first day of the tourney.
Southwestern fared extremely well in the B Bracket singles competition. Sophomore Marieke Visser prevailed in several hard fought matches that included winning tie breakers and fighting off match points to take first place in the B bracket.
First-year Heba Abdel-Rahim advanced to the quarter finals of the B Bracket, ultimately losing in a tie breaker. First-year Abby Garcia also won her first round match. Sophomore Chelsea Sommerfeldt and first-year Mattie Cryer lost their first round matches.
In the A singles bracket, sophomore Gabby Hunt won her first round match. Senior Aimee Blake, junior Virginia Stofer, and sophomore Elizabeth Ellis all lost in their first round matches. Blake and Stofer each picked up a win followed by a loss in the A draw consolation bracket.
In doubles competition, Blake/Ellis were the only doubles team to win a first round match.
Regionals marks the end of the fall season for the Pirates. They return to competition on February 2, taking on Dallas Baptist at home.
