Rain Shortens Spring Opener

BELTON, Texas - Southwestern tennis' spring opener was shortened due to rain in Central Texas. Despite the fewer matches, SU still played well and are ready for their first dual match. 

SU's men's team had the best outing in the Flight 2 singles as Alec Bergerson and Sam McCready both won their first two matches to advance to the finals. Bergerson defeated Will Thomas of Howard Payne 6-4, 6-1 in the opening round and Collin Davies of UMHB in the second round 6-3, 6-1 while McCready won 4-6, 6-3, 10-3 over Martin of UMHB and 6-3, 6-1 over Kunde of Austin College to set up the SU/SU final that was rained out. 

Egan Cornachione and Andy Clarage lost their first round match in the flight one singles, but Cornachione defeated Smith of Austin College 6-3, 6-0 to advance to the fifth place match. In Flight 3, Dax Collison and Jonathan Sandoval played well with Sandoval forcing a tie breaker set, but eventually fell into the loser's bracket. Both won their next round, however, and set up a dual for 5th place. 

In Flight 4 Round Robin play, Alvaro Rojas was 0-2, Edward Yu 0-1, Jimmy Alleyn 1-1, and Arie Angeledes 1-0. 

Southwestern also fared well in double play as Cornachione/McCready and Bergerson/Sandoval both won their opening round match. Niether pair was able to win the following contest, however, and dropped into the match for third place. Angeledes/Alleyn and Clarage/Collison also won their first round matches in Flight 2 doubles play and Clarage/Collison also picked up another match victory in the second round to advance to the bracket finals. Rojas/Yu fell in their opening round match but rebounded with an 8-4 win to move on for a shot at 5th. 

On the women's side, Aimee Blake and Gabby Hunt set the tone in Flight 1 singles with opening round wins. Blake defeated Guerrero of Howard Payne 6-2, 6-4 before falling to Fausett of UMHB 6-1, 6-1 while Hunt won both of her matches to advance to the finals 6-0, 6-3 and 6-1, 6-4. 

Virginia Stofer had a strong showing in Flight 2, outlasting Martin 6-1, 4-6, 10-6 before falling to Warrent 6-3, 6-1 and into a match for third. Elizabeth Ellis dropped her opening match but rebounded with a hard-fought 2-6, 6-1, 10-4 win to earn a shot at fifth.

Marieke Visser and Kristina Krampitz both easily won their matches in the third flight and Visser continued to play well and won 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the finals. Kramptiz dropped her second match and fell into the loser's semifinals.

In Flight 4 Round Robin play, Sarah Johnson went 1-2, Chelsea Sommerfeldt 1-3 and Sharon Saltoon 1-2.

Stofer/Hunt played extremely well in Flight 1 doubles play, winning 8-5, 8-6 to advance to the finals. Blake/Ellis fell in their opening match but won their next contest to advance to the fifth place contest. Flight 2 round robin play saw SU's Krmapitz/Sommerfeldt go 0-2 and Johnson/Visser go 2-0. 

Southwestern opens dual match play at home on Febrauary 22nd as they face East Texas Baptist University at 3 p.m.
