Pirates Continue Winning Streak Sweeping Doubleheader Over Tornadoes

 AUSTIN, Texas - The Southwestern University Pirates softball team defeated the Concordia University Texas Tornados 3-0 and 14-5 in a doubleheader on Tuesday evening to continue their winning streak.
 

 Game 1 – Southwestern 3, Concordia University Texas 0 

Southwestern started the first inning with Kaitlynn Copher doubling to left center and earning an RBI as Sydney Scott ran in the first run for the Pirates. making the score 1-0. The Tornados were quick to stop the Pirates from making any more runs in the first inning, but Pirate pitcher Lindsey Longuet kept the Tornadoes at bay. The second and third innings, both the Pirates and Tornados were scoreless. 

In the top of the fourth inning, Sam Martinez, who waited on the second base, used Jordan Farber's hit to center field as her chance to run in and score the second run for the Pirates. With Southwestern up 2-0, Concordia did not make any runs off Longuet, who only had three hits and seven strikeouts. The last run came in the top of the seventh as Maddie Mefford scored after Andrea Hern's sacrifice fly, earning her an RBI and a Pirate win.  

Game 2 – Southwestern 14, Concordia University Texas 5 

In the second game, Concordia scored the first three runs in the first inning while the Pirates were held to zero runs. However, the Pirates were quick to bounce back in the second inning with Jessey Nunez' sacrifice fly letting Izzy Richey score the first run for the Pirates. Up next with the bases loaded, Scott singled to left field and Hern scored the second run. To tie up the game, Copher pulled a walk from the Tornados pitcher that lead to Rylee Rudloff scoring the third run.

Concordia answered back with a run to gain the lead in the bottom of the second, but after a scoreless third inning, the Pirates gained momentum to expand the lead over the Tornados. Tori Montemayor scored a run off of a wild pitch in the top of the fourth, followed Kathryn Dull singling to left field and earning an RBI as Richey scored the fifth run for the Pirates.

In the fifth inning Scott started by scoring the sixth run. Richey singled to left field for Montemayor to score. Up next, Dull doubled, hitting the ball the far left center field and earning three RBI's as Copher, Ricthcy and Hern scored, making it 10-4 in the top of the fifth. Longuet, once again holding off the Tornados attempt to get back into the game, kept Concordia from scoring in the fifth and sixth innings. 

In the seventh, the Pirates had their last big run on Concordia with Kealie House singling to left field and earning an RBI with Hern to score. Scott singled and gained an RBI as Nunez scored. Lastly, Montemayor singled to the shortstop and advanced to second on the throw, earning an RBI as House made the 14th run.

Highlighted players stats for both games include Dull, who earned the high of five RBI's in the second game. Scott and Copher both earned two RBI's with Hern, Farber, Montemayor, Ritchy, Nunez and House each earning one RBI. Pitcher Longuet earned two wins today improving her record 7-3. 

The Pirates improved 14-5 in season and 5-1 in conference play. The Pirates now get ready for the Tucson Invitational Games in Tucson, Ariz., where they will compete in five games over three days during Spring Break. To see more information please see the Southwestern softball schedule.
