GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Southwestern University Pirates softball team struggled to catch up to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, ending with their first home game loss 0-3 on Taylor Sander Fields.

In the top of the first inning, Lindsey Longuet and Jessey Nunez collaborated to take out the first three UMHB hitters, with Nunez lining out the first batter and then Longuet striking out the second hitter followed with a ground out for the third hitter.

Though the Pirates did not score in the bottom of the first, once again in the top of the second the Pirate infield caught the first hitter's pop fly and then continued to keep the Cru from scoring. However, the UMHB fielding defense also kept the Pirates from scoring any runs. Going into the top of the third, the Cru's Avery Kelly scored the first run of the game that was followed by a second run off of a stolen base from Lexi Harris. The Pirates were able to end the inning quickly with a ground out from Nunez cutting off any more runs for UMHB.

The Pirates kept the Cru from scoring any runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, but Southwestern also remained scoreless. Starting at the top of the seventh inning, after Longuet battled and contained the Cru for most of the game, UMHB's Izzy Gutierrez hit a home run to RBI and make the third run on the Pirates. Longuet remained calm and ended the inning with two more swinging strikes.

The Pirates had the opportunity to get back in the game in the bottom of the seventh, but the Cru held Southwestern to no runs and handed the Pirates their first home loss.

Up next, the Pirates have a quick turn around and will get ready to play Huston-Tillotson on Thursday, March 7 at 6 p.m. Then they will continue with their second SCAC conference series against Austin College with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 7 at 4 and 6 p.m. and then Sunday, March 8 at noon.
