Southwestern Softball Splits SCAC Doubleheader With Trinity

SAN ANTONIO, Texas –  In the second day of Southwestern's first Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) series, the Pirates dropped one game 4-5 but came back in the final game to win 8-0 on Sunday afternoon.  

 

Game 1 – Trinity 5, Southwestern 4 

Southwestern started the first inning with Kaitlynn Copher singling off to the right side of the field while managing to make it to second base off of the throw and Sydney Scott scoring the first run for the Pirates. Up next, Jessey Nunez earned one RBI hitting in Copher to score the second run. Then Sam Martinez singled up the middle to allow Maddie Mefford to score the third run before ending the inning. 

The Tigers scored their first run in the bottom of the second and then their second in the fourth inning but the Pirates continued to lead lead Trinity 3-2. 

Nunez made it to first base on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded, earning her second RBI as Tori Montemayor advanced to second, Mefford advanced to third and Copher scored the fourth run. 

Though the Pirates started off with a lead, Trinity scored two more runs in the sixth to tie up the game and in the seventh, the Tigers scored the winning run to end the game with a Tiger win. 

 

Game 2 – Southwestern 8, Trinity 0

Going into the second game the Pirates came back with a vengeance as pitcher Lindsey Longuet picked up her first shut out of the season with five strikeouts. The Pirates improved to 5-2 wins this season. 

Scott scored the first run of the game after Copher made a sacrifice fly to center field, giving her one RBI and the Pirates the early lead. In the second inning Scott singled to center field and advanced to second on the throw allowing Andrea Hern to score the second run for the Pirates. 

With Longuet holding the Tigers from making any runs, Katelyn Francis singled through the left side of the field earning her an RBI with Copher scoring, making the game 3-0 in the third inning. 

In the fifth inning Hern reached first base off of an error, allowing Martinez and Rylee Rudloff to score and Hern to earn two RBI's. Scott continued the runs by doubling after hitting the ball right center, also gaining two RBI's while Jordan Farber and Hern scored two more runs to make the game 7-0. 

Montemayor made the final run of the game by singling up the middle and allowing Scott to score.  Longuet held off the Tigers in the bottom of the fifth, giving the Pirates the win. 

After completing their first SCAC series the Pirates improve 9-4 on the season and 2-1 on conference play. Up next, Southwestern softball gets ready to host a week of home games starting with Mary Hardin-Baylor on Tuesday, March 3 at 5 p.m. and then Huston-Tillotson on Thursday, March 5 at 6 p.m.
