Pirate Softball Splits Doubleheader Against St. Edwards

Pirate Softball Splits Doubleheader Against St. Edwards
AUSTIN, Texas – The Southwestern University Pirates split a doubleheader against the St. Edwards University Hilltoppers this Sunday afternoon 1-2 and 3-2 on Diane Daniels Field.

Starting in the top of the first inning, Jordan Farber scored the first run for the Pirates after Katelyn Francis hit a sacrifice fly, giving Southwestern the first lead in the game. The Pirate defense held the Hilltoppers until the 6th inning and Lindsey Longuet threw five strikeouts while facing 23 at-bat, however, the Hilltopper's finally scored a run after Morgan Lewis walked to first causing Ashley Nassy to score. St. Edward's Calli Birch scored a second run before a ground out from the right field, but the Pirates could not score any runs in the top of the seventh to make their way back into the game, giving St. Edwards the first win.

In the second game, once again the Pirates Francis would bat on a fielder's choice while Kaitlynn Copher reached second base off on an error and Sydney Scott ran home to give the Southwestern the first run in the game. The Hilltoppers Allen singled to cause Morgan Arcia to score, tieing up the game 1-1, but St. Edwards Calli Birch grounded out by shortstop freshman Jessey Nunez to end the second inning.

In the third inning, Tori Montemayor singled to the shortstop allowing Kylie Nixon to advanced to third base and Copher to run score a second run for the Pirates. Once again with the bases loaded, Nunez singled, advancing Izzy Richey to second, Montemayor to third and Nixon to score the third run making the game 3-1 with the Pirates in the lead.

St. Edwards scored in the bottom of the fourth with a run by Jordan Neely, but the Pirates threw a change-up with pitchers, allowing all of the Pirate pitchers (the big three) to keep the Hilltoppers from scoring. The starting pitcher for game two was Lexi Shafer, who had held the Hilltoppers to the only two runs in four innings, allowed on five hits and grabbed one strikeout. She was switched up with Kinly McCaffrey in the fifth inning where she allowed zero runs out of the nine hitters faced. Then Longuet came in for McCaffrey during the sixth inning, throwing off the Hilltoppers to keep them from scoring and giving Louguet her first save of the season to end the game with a Pirate win.

With the split, the Pirates record is now 6-2 and they will get ready for the upcoming doubleheader against the Mary Hardin-Baylor Crusaders on Tuesday, Feb. 25, at 4 and 6 p.m. They will then play their first Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) series against the Trinity Tigers on Friday, Feb. 29, at 6 p.m. and Saturday, March 1, at noon and 2 p.m.
