Softball Advances to SCAC Championship with Second Victory Over Centenary

SHREVEPORT, La. – The Southwestern University Pirates softball team is one of two Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) teams left standing after defeating the Centenary Ladies 3-2 for the second time in as many days to advance to the championship.

Lindsey Longuet, the recently announced SCAC Pitcher of the Year, put together another strong performance with a complete game, eight-inning victory and Kylie Nixon hit a walk-off single to right center in the bottom of the eighth for the victory in extra innings.

Longuet and the Pirate defense retired nine of the first 10 batters with Longuet picking up three strikeouts through three innings.

The Pirates struck first, scoring on a RBI-double from Kaitlynn Copher through the left side, scoring Tori Montemayor, who reached on fielder's choice.

Centenary tied the game in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Sydney Hurley, scoring Cassie Gonzales, who opened the inning with an infield single and reached second on a throwing error.

Southwestern responded immediately, retaking the lead in the bottom of the fourth with Katelyn Francis hitting a sacrifice fly to score Mefford, who hit a leadoff double to right center and advanced to third on a wild pitch.

The Ladies tied the game in the top of the fifth on Becca McGough's single to right center, scoring Nichole Gauntt, who reached on a single to right center.

Both teams went scoreless in the sixth and seventh inning, setting up Nixon's heroics in the bottom of the eighth. Mefford opened the inning with a single up the middle and Francis laid down a sacrifice bunt to move her into scoring position, setting up Nixon's walk-off single to right-center.

With the win, the Pirates will play Texas Lutheran in the championship game at 1:00 p.m., needing two wins after losing to the Bulldogs in the semifinals.
