GEORGETOWN, Texas -- This Saturday afternoon the Southwestern University softball team swept the weekend's doubleheader against the Hardin-Simmons Cowgirls with a score of 3-2 in the first game and then a tally of 19-2 runs in the second game. 

 

This would be the highest scoring game the Pirates have had since 2016 against Lyndon State. 

 

Lindsey Longuet was the winning pitcher in the first game totaling eight strikes out the first game while only allowing two runs for the Cowgirls, helping the team win the first game. Bailey Meyer, who was also the winning pitcher for the second game, threw five strikeouts and held the Cowgirls to only two runs in all five innings, showing the strength of the Pirate defense. 

 

In the first game against the Cowgirls, both Southwestern and Hardin-Simmons could not stay on the bases long enough to get any runs in the first four innings. Thanks to both teams pitchers and defense, the first run was finally made by the Cowgirls in the fifth inning. One more run would follow in the sixth, making the game 2-0 with no runs made by the Pirates.

 

Going into the final innings, Tori Montemayor would double to center field allowing Kaitlynn Copher to score the first run for the Pirates in the sixth. Katelyn Francis would be next to bat after Montemayor and would single to the cowgirl's pitcher who threw an error and allowed Montemayor and Maddie Mefford to score two more runs to make the game 3-2, Pirates up. Hardin-Simmons was unable to answer back in the seventh inning, ending the first game by a close score. 

 

However, in the second game, the Pirates offense found a rhythm that the Cowgirls could not shake to keep the Pirates off the bases. In the first inning, Meyers came out of the game hot by pitching two swinging strikeouts. When it came time for the Pirates to bat, freshman Kylie Nixon (starting for the first time this season) scored the first RBI with Sydney Scott to score the first run. Maddie Mefford and Montemayor scored two more RBIs to have the Pirates 3-0 in the first. 

 

The Pirates continued to score four more runs in the second inning while Meyers kept the Cowgirls two one run. At the bottom of the third, the Pirates would go on a 10 runs scoring spree to tack up 17 runs over the Cowgirls in the third. 

 

Both Celeste Silvas and Nixon would have the high of four RBIs each with Nixon hitting a pair of doubles and Silvas with one triple. The Pirates scored two more runs in the fourth inning but the game ended in the top of the fifth with the Pirates winning 19-2.

 

Up next, the Pirates get back into conference play as they travel to Shreveport, Louisiana, to play Centenary College in a four-game series this weekend on March 30-31.
