Pirates Grab Two Wins Against Concordia Texas

Pirates Grab Two Wins Against Concordia Texas
GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Southwestern Pirates softball team added another two wins to their season in the games against Concordia Texas University Wednesday afternoon.

After sweeping Huston-Tillotson in Tuesday's doubleheader, the Pirates battled the CTX Tornados in two close games winning 3-2 in the first game and  4-2 in the second.

In the first game, Southwestern would be the first to score with Jordan Faber scoring the first run for the Pirates and then Sydney Scott running home off of an error by the CTX second baseman in the first inning. For the next four innings, both teams defense would pick up all fly balls, inning the innings with only four to five batters.

The Tornados were able to score a run in the fourth inning and the sixth to tie the game 2-2. With the game tied both teams came into the seventh inning trying to score. Concordia, unable to keep their hits away from the outfield, was unable to score any runs in the seventh, which allowed the Pirates to score the final run. With Farber and Celeste Silvas on the bases, Kaitlynn Copher gave her hit to center field to allow Farber to run home, giving the Pirates the first game win.

In the second game, the Pirates gained a huge lead over the Tornadoes by scoring four runs in the first, second and third innings, while pitcher Bailey Meyer kept the Tornados at bay from scoring any runs. The Tornados were able to score two runs in the fourth inning, however, they were unable to get past Meyer and the Pirate defense and the game ended with the Pirates winning 4-2.  The Pirates now improve 16-4 in season.

Standout players were  Meyers, who pitched a total of five strikeouts in the second game, and freshman Lexi Shafer, who pitched three strikeouts.

Up next, the Pirates get ready for another doubleheader against Hardin-Simmons this Saturday, March 23, at 3 and 5 p.m.
