Pirates Sweep Doubleheader Over McMurry

Pirates Sweep Doubleheader Over McMurry

GEORGETOWN, Texas -- The Pirates had no problem catching the momentum in the first game to finish in five innings. Battling through the cold and unwanted drizzle, the Southwestern Pirates's pushed through their icy, numbed palms to cap the second game, earning the sweep over the McMurry War Hawks.

Defeating McMurry 9-1 and then 7-6, the Pirates now stand 4-0 in the season, moving them to the number one seed in the Southern Colligate Athletic Conference (SCAC) standings.

In the first game, McMurry was able to hold the Pirates scoreless in the first inning. However, with only giving up one run, Lindsey Longuet kept the War Hawks at bay to give the Pirates the five runs in the next three innings. Sydney Scott had two steals, one leading to home, and she also singled to center field to allow Andrea Hern to score. Celeste Silvas also followed Scotts's lead by stealing bases to have Kaitlynn Copher send her to home plate.

With great plays made, it was the fifth inning that sparked the Pirates victory in the first game. Both Katelyn Francis and Maddie Mefford hit back to back doubles to give the Pirates two runs in the fifth and with bases loaded, Hern and Scott were able to send two more final runs in to give the Pirates the first game.

In the second game, the War Hawks came back with a vengeance and scored three runs in the first inning with help from Avery McDaniel who doubled to left field with the bases loaded, giving the War Hawks two runs to home. Only scoring two runs in the first inning and none in the second, the Pirates caught their rhythm and gained the lead in the third inning to lead the game 7-4 in the sixth inning. Copher played a huge part in the Pirates offense by scoring two runs and hitting one double and a triple to give two more runs. Silvas also tacked on two runs to home to help the Pirates take the lead.

Going into the seventh inning the Pirates struggled to keep McMurry off the bases. With two crucial errors resulting in two runs to home, the seventh inning went to an unsettling score of 7-6 with McMurry hot on Southwestern's tail. With the bases loaded, McDaniel singled to third allowing Hern to get the final out of the game.

Up next, the Pirates hit the road to San Antonio to play Our Lady of the Lake in a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 16.
