Softball Sweeps SCAC Player of the Week Awards

Softball Sweeps SCAC Player of the Week Awards

The Southwestern University Pirates softball team opened its season with a 2-0 sweep of visiting Pacific Lutheran University, getting strong performances from Sydney Scott and relief pitcher Nadia Netek.

Both were recognized by the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC), earning the first Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week honors this season.

Scott opened the Pirates' season with a leadoff double in the bottom of the first, scoring the first Southwestern run. She showed power to left field with two doubles and patience at the plate, drawing a walk with bases loaded to secure the Pirates' first victory.

Through the team's first two games, Scott was 5-for-8 with two RBI. She displayed speed on the base paths with two stolen bases and three runs scored.

Netek came off the bench to pick up wins in both of the Pirates' games this week against Pacific Lutheran.

Pitching in crucial situations in both appearances, Netek stepped into the pitcher's circle with two out and bases loaded and stopping the Lutes' four-run inning to keep the game tie in Game One. The junior came into relief in the second game, stopping another potential big inning and going the rest of the way to pick up a second win.

In all, Netek pitched 5.2 innings giving up only a single run and walk with just four hits.

The Pirates (2-0) will host Hardin-Simmons University on Friday, Feb. 8 at 3:00 p.m. and McMurry University on Saturday, Sept. 9 at 1:00 p.m. Both dates are doubleheaders.
