Softball Uses Extras to Knock Off Concordia Texas

AUSTIN, Texas - The Southwestern University softball team used a strong pitching performance from sophomores Lindsey Longuet and Bailey Meyer to knock off the Concordia Texas Tornadoes by the score of 3-1 in 8 innings on Monday afternoon.

Sophomore Sydney Scott led the game off with a single and advanced on a wild pitch. A Tornado error on a sac bunt by junior Celeste Silvas sent Scott around to score and gave the Pirates an early 1-0 lead.

Longuet proceeded to pitch five innings, keeping Concordia scoreless in the process while allowing only one hit and striking out six.

Meyer came in for the save in the sixth inning and Southwestern took that 1-0 lead into the seventh, but Concordia Texas finally broke through, scratching a run across in the bottom half to force extras with the Pirates.

Scott wasted little to to put Southwestern in business in the eighth, lacing a one out double to get into scoring position. Another error on a Silvas sac bunt would score Scott and put the Pirates ahead 2-1. Sophomore Kaitlynn Copher added an insurance run with a RBI single to make it 3-1.

A pair of Pirate errors put the first two runners on for Concordia, but Meyer finish it off getting a fly out and back-to-back Ks to earn the win.

Meyer (W, 8-4) went three complete, allowing one run on two hits and striking out seven in the win.

Scott finished 2-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored while Silvas was 1-for-2 with a run scored. Copher drove in the lone RBI while sophomores Mary Alex Krosby and McKenna Zinke were each 1-for-2.

The Pirates move to 14-9 overall and will return to conference play on next Saturday afternoon as they start a four game series against Trinity. First pitch of the doubleheader begins at 1 PM.
