Pirates Fall to No. 3 Texas-Tyler in Home Opener

GEORGETOWN - The Southwestern University softball team had a tough task in their home opener on Wednesday afternoon as they welcomed in the No. 3 team in the nation and 2016 National Champion Texas-Tyler Patriots. On this afternoon, the Patriots were too tough as they swept the Pirates 6-0 and 15-3 (5) at Taylor-Saunders Field.

Southwestern held strong early on as the game was scoreless through two. However, Texas-Tyler scored a run in the third and fourth innings to take a 2-0 lead. They added one more in the sixth before opening up a 6-0 lead with three runs in the seventh.

Junior Celeste Silvas finished with a 2-for-3 day while sophomore Izzy Jack, senior Taylor Curtis, and sophomore Andrea Hern all had a hit. Sophomore Nadia Netek (0-1) did a solid job holding the powerful Patriot offense in check, pitching 6.0 total innings with a pair of strikeouts in the loss. Freshman Tori Montemayor pitched an inning of releief, allowing no hits.

Colleen Bentke (1-0) earned the win with a complete game shutout for the Patriots. Ashley Perez finished 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.

In the second game, Southwestern fell into a huge hole early on, allowing 11 runs in the first inning en route to a 16-3 (5) defeat.

Jack finished 2-for-2 in the contest with a pair of doubles and two RBIs while Hearn also drove in a run. Sophomores Katie Bricarell and Kaitlynn Copher each had a hit in the contest. Sophomore Bailey Meyer (2-2) took the loss for the Pirates.

Perez was excellent again for the Patriots, going 2-for-4 with four RBIs, a pair of doubles, and a pair of runs scored. Whitney Romero (1-0) earned th win.

Southwestern moves to 2-4 on the weekend and will be back in action at home this weekend as they welcome in Our Lady of the Lake for a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 PM.
