Late game heroics lift ‘Roos over Pirates

Austin College scored game winning runs in their final at bat in both games to hand the Pirates a pair of SCAC losses on Friday in Sherman.

Neither team had their bats going in game one as it was a pitcher's duel through regulation and into extra innings. As the game moved into the eighth the Pirates seemed poised to score, moving runners to second and third with two outs. Herrera got Berkeley Bacon to fly out to centerfield to end the threat and bring the 'Roos to the plate with a chance to win the game.

AC did just that with a leadoff walk to Vara. Vara then stole second to move into scoring position and a walkoff double from Clendennen to bring home Vara for the game winner.

Cozette Palmer garners the loss despite the outstanding effort on the mound, allowing just one run on three hits while walking four and striking out seven. Victoria Herrera earns the win while scattering four hits and no runs while striking out six and walking none.

Bacon did lead at the plate, going 2-4 in game one while Rosengren and Oorlog notched one hit each. Clendennen led the 'Roos at the plate going 2-4.

Game two started just as game one with pitchers taking command of the game. Austin College took the lead in the fifth on an RBI single by England.

Southwestern was silent until the seventh when Scott and Ramos singled back to back to drive home Biggers and Holland to take the lead 2-1.

Austin College had the answer again, however, and scored the two runs they needed for the win in the bottom of the seventh, taking advantage of a Pirate error in the process.

Novander suffered the loss allowing three runs on seven hits while walking two and striking out two. Ashleigh Scott led at the plate going 2-4 with one RBI. For the 'Roos, England went 2-4 with 2 RBIs at the plate and Herrera got the win in just .2 innings. Sophia Hernandez started the contest and threw 6.1 innings, allowing two runs on three hits while walking three and striking out none.

Southwestern falls to 14-14 on the year and 10-4 in conference play after the pair of losses on Friday. Austin improves to 10-10 on the year and 5-9 in the SCAC. SU remains in second place in the conference while AC sits in fourth.

The two teams face off again for another double header on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
