Dallas snaps Pirates' SCAC win streak in extra innings

Dallas snaps Pirates' SCAC win streak in extra innings

The University of Dallas needed extra innings to give Southwestern their first loss after the Pirates posted a come from behind win in game one of Saturday's double header.

Dallas posted runs on the scoreboard first with one in the first and two in the third to take a 3-0 lead that held up through the fourth inning. Alyssa Novander entered the game in relief and settled the Pirate defense down.

Back to back infield bunt singles by Marissa Irvin and Linsay Biggers set the stage for Ashleigh Scott's squeeze but to score Southwestern's first run of the game and cut the Crusader lead to two, 3-1.

A two-out homerun to left field by _ put UD back on top by three, 4-1, in the sixth, but Southwestern loaded the bases and took advantage to push across three including a two-RBI single by Irvin to tie the game 4-4. Scott's chopper to the left side brought home Ally Holland to give Southwestern the lead for the first time in the game.

Novander and the Pirate "D" did their job in the seventh, allowing just one baserunner before closing out the game for the win.

Irvin had a huge game one at the plate, going 3-3 with two RBIs. Novander earned the win, allowing just three hits and one run in 4.2 innings of work.

Southwestern took an early lead 1-0 but Dallas quickly responded with a run of their own in the third and went up 3-2 after two runs in the sixth. SU managed just one in response but stayed within striking distance. UD posted three runs in the top of the seventh and seemed to have the game in hand, but the Pirates had other thoughts as they tied the game 6-6 with an infield chopper from Holland.

As the game rolled into extra innings neither team was able to score until the international tie breaker was instituted in the tenth. Both teams posted one run in the tenth and then Dallas pushed across two in the eleventh and held the Pirates from tying to snap SU's winning streak.

Novander garnered the loss, allowing six runs on eight hits while walking one and striking out three. UD's Katie Lee earned the complete game win, allowing eight runs on 13 hits. Rosengren led the Pirates at the plate, going 3-5 with one RBI and two runs scored.

Southwestern moves to 13-11 on the year and 9-1 in SCAC play while UD goes to 15-9 overall and 8-4 in conference. The two teams faceoff again tomorrow for SCAC doubleheader action starting at noon.
