Softball takes two in SCAC opener against Schreiner

Southwestern's bats came in full force to defend their home turf as the Pirates posted a pair of run rule victories over Schreiner on Saturday. SU won game one 18-6 in five and game two 9-1 in six.

Schreiner opened the game hot, shocking Southwestern with four runs on three hits to jump out to an early 4-0 lead. SU quickly responded with a huge first inning. The Pirates scored 11 runs including a grand slam from Stacy Rosengren to take the lead 11-4.

Southwestern used a steady stream of hits and runs while relief pitcher Alyssa Novander took care of things on the mound, allowing just two more Mountaineer runs in the final four innings to seal the win 18-6.

Ashleigh Scott was 3-3 with four RBIs and two runs scored in game one while Rosengren went 3-4 with five RBIs and Sydney Oorlog also went 3-4 with two RBIs and two triples. Novander earned the win, allowing two runs, no earned, on three hits.

Southwestern rode the momentum right into game two as Cozette Palmer sat down three straight to start the game on the mound and the offense posted four runs to give Palmer to room to work.

Schreiner didn't cross home plate until the fourth inning and trailed 5-1 heading into the sixth. Southwestern unleashed their fury again in the sixth and closed the game with four runs on three hits to seal the 9-1 run rule win.

Michele Ramos went 4-5 from the plate while Marissa Irvin and Jordan Kunz both went 2-3. Palmer earned the complete game win in game two, allowing one run on four hits while striking out four and walking two.

Southwestern improves to 6-10 on the year while Schreiner falls to 3-5 overall. The two teams face off again on Sunday for another double header beginning at noon.
