Pirates drop twin bill to Bruins

GEOREGETOWN – The Southwestern University softball team fell in a non-conference double-header Saturday afternoon dropping game one 13-4 and game two 7-2 against George Fox at Taylor-Sanders Field.

The Pirates battled back and forth in game one with the Bruins before the long ball caught up with the home team. George Fox belted five home runs in the opener en route to a 13-4 win.

The Pirates used three pitchers as all three were unable to figure out the Bruin hitters. Nicole Gibbs was tagged with the loss as the starter as she was responsible for six of the 13 runs.

Offensively, Michele Ramos scored two runs and went 3-for-3 to lead the way for the Pirates. However, Southwestern left eight runners on base in the loss.

Southwestern had taken a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the second inning however George Fox responded with a pair of two-run homers in the fourth to take a 7-3 lead.

Erin Hento earned the win for the Bruins as she pitched six innings and scattered nine hits during her time in the circle. Hento was responsible for all four runs.

Kayla Irvin and Karen Ramirez joined Ramos as the only Pirates to finish with multiple hits in game one.. Irvin also added the only extra base hit for Southwestern with a double in the bottom of the second inning.

In game two the Bruins scored in four of the first five innings and got a solid complete game effort from Allyssa DenDekker to complete the sweep of the Pirates.

Southwestern would scratch across a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning to cut the George Fox lead to 5-2.

Linsay Biggers led off the inning with a single and moved to third one batter later on a double from Christina Crandall. Biggers would score when Karen Ramirez singled her home and was followed by Crandall's run on an Ashleigh Scott single through the left side.

However, that would be all the offense the Pirates would produce in the night cap as George Fox added two more runs in the fifth inning to reach the final score, 7-2.

Southwestern continues its six game home stand on Wednesday when the Pirates host cross-town rival Concordia in a non-conference double-header. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. from Taylor-Sanders Field.
