Tigers Trip Up Pirates

Tigers Trip Up Pirates

GEORGETOWN, Texas - Trinity tripped up Southwestern in a pair of close, well contested games.  Trinity won 4-0 in game one and snuck past the Pirates 2-1 in game two, a 10 inning thriller.

In game one, TU's Sanchez drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt.  Russell later drew a two out walk to give Trinity runners on first and second base.  Pitcher Kelsey Kingston struck out Haby to end the early threat.

Michelle Ramos drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the 3rd for the Pirates.  Then Karen Ramirez hit a double to the wall in center field.  Ramos tried to score and in a close play at the plate, was thrown out to keep it a scoreless game.

Kingston and the Southwestern defense kept Trinity at bay until the 5th inning.  Fleischman reached on an error and advanced to second on a ground out.  She moved over to third on a single by Armstrong.   A run scored on a fielder's choice by Rush and Armstrong later scored on a wild pitch to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the 5th, Jessica Bryant singled up the middle with one out.  Ramos followed with a bloop single to center field.  Later with two outs, Abigail O'Connor hit a grounder into the gap on the right side.  However, the second baseman was somehow able to get her glove on the ball and flip it over to first to get the third out on a bang bang play.

Trinity added two insurance runs in the 7th and retired the Pirates in order to get the win in game one, 4-0.

SU's pitcher Kayla Irvin was lights out and got some great defensive help to keep Trinity from adding to their meager lead.

Still down a run, the Pirates needed to score to continue the game in the bottom of the 7th.  Ramirez started the rally with a two out single through the left side.  She scored the tying run on a double to left center by Ashleigh Scott, making it 1-1.

TU's Armstrong hit a leadoff single to right center to begin extra innings.  She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Rush.  Then Russell reached on an error by the third baseman.  Irvin and the Pirates got out of the jam by getting a strike out and a fly out to end Trinity's scoring chance.

Trinity started the 10th with Fleischman on second base.  She advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Sanchez.  Armstrong reached on a fielder's choice to the pitcher.  She then tried to steal second.  On the throw, Fleischman took off for home and scored while Armstrong was caught in a run down and tagged out.  The Tigers put runners on first and second after Rush was hit by a pitch and Russell singled.   Then SU's Ramos saved a couple of runs on a great diving catch, ranging deep into the gap in left center to end the rally at 2-1.

In the bottom half, Ramirez was placed on second base.  She advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Scott.  She would remain there for the final two outs and Trinity would secure the 2-1 win.

Kayla Irvin pitched well in the complete game loss.  She scattered 5 hits in 10 innings of work and struck out 7 batters.  The offense was led by Ashleigh Scott, who went 2-4 with the game tying RBI double.  Seniors Karen Ramirez (1-5, 1 R) and Jessica Bryant (3-4, 2 2B) both contributed as well before being honored post game for their contributions to the program on their Senior Day.

The two teams continue the series tomorrow, Sunday, April 21st, with another  doubleheader beginning at 12:00pm.
