Pirates Drop Opening Doubleheader

Pirates Drop Opening Doubleheader

GEORGETOWN, Texas - In game one of the doubleheader, Amanda Woods led off with a double to right center field for the visiting Bruins.  She later scored on a close play at the plate on a RBI single by Kayla Anderson.  Bethany Chriss followed with a double and the play at second base allowed Anderson to score on the throw.  Then Kat Hylton singled up the middle to bring home Chriss for the early 3-0 lead.

The Pirates opened up their season with a double to left field from lead off batter Karen Ramirez.  She later advanced to third on a Tessa Galloway ground out.  Kayla Irvin drove in Ramirez on a RBI single to center field to cut it to a 3-1 game.

George Fox tried to rally in the top of the 4th inning by getting runners to second and third base with two outs.  Southwestern starting pitcher Kelsey Kingston worked out of trouble by getting Jenna Kirk to fly out to center field to end the side.

The Bucs almost broke through again in the bottom of the 5th inning.  Ramirez led off with a single through the right side of the infield.  Jessica Bryant pushed her over to second on a sacrifice bunt.  Then Ramirez advanced to third on a Galloway ground out.  The Bruins starter Allyssa DenDekker got Irvin to ground out to end the inning with the 3-1 score.

After a lead off ground out to start the top of the 6th inning, the Bruins put runners on first and third with a single from Nicole Renteria followed by a double from Felicia Chavez.  Woods put down a bunt and the Pirates elected to make a play on Renteria headed for home.  Abigail O'Connor put the tag on for the out and fired to second base to try and catch the advancing Woods.  On the throw down to second, Chavez took off for the plate and was gunned down by Stacy Rosengren with a diving tag from O'Connor for the double play to end the threat.

The Pirates had lead off singles in each of the 6th and 7th innings but were unable to convert them into runs and the game finished 3-1.  Karen Ramirez led the Bucs by going 2-4 with a double and scored the lone run for the home team.  Allyssa DenDekker pitched a complete game and earned the win for George Fox University.

Southwestern was first on the scoreboard in game two of the day.  In the bottom of the 1st, Ashleigh Scott got on base with a one out walk.  She advanced to second on a single to center field by Galloway.  Irvin followed with a ground out to the shortstop that moved up both runners into scoring position.  Rosengren came through in the clutch with a single to left field that scored both runners for the 2-0 lead.

The Bruins scored in the top of the 2nd to cut it to a 2-1 game, but the Bucs added a run in the bottom half of the inning.  The speedy Biggers beat out a single to the pitcher and took second on a sacrifice bunt from O'Connor.  She made it to third after tagging up on a deep fly ball out to center field by Ramirez.  Biggers scored easily on a double that was crushed down the left field line by Scott to make it 3-1.

George Fox added a run apiece in the 3rd and 4th innings to tie the game at 3-3.  The tide turned for the Bruins in the top of the 5th.  Fielder hit a 2 RBI double to right center and Woods hit a grand slam to bust the game wide open.  The visitors added two more runs in the top of the 6th for the eventual 11-3 final score.

The Pirates were led by Ashleigh Scott who went 1-2 with a double, a RBI, a walk, and scored.  Linsay Biggers, Tessa Galloway, and Stacy Rosengren turned in strong offensive performances as well.
