Late Goal Sinks Pirates in SCAC Loss to Dallas

GEORGETOWN - The Southwestern University Pirates gave up a late goal in the 85th minute that proved to be the game winner as they fell to the Dallas Crusaders by the score of 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at Varsity Field.

The two teams were even throughout the contest while Dallas holding a slight 18-16 lead in shots, but Southwestern holding a 5-3 lead in corner kicks.

The Pirates were the aggressor in the first half, out shooting Dallas 9-7 as they looked to take an early lead in the contest. However, neither team could come away with anything as three saves from senior Kylie Hunt kept the game scoreless.

In the second half, sophomore Mary Cardone made her 2017 debut, picking up three saves in the process. Southwestern looked as though they had moved ahead as they found the back of the net, but a foul in the box negated the goal and kept the game knotted at zero.

Dallas, who got 11 shots off in the second half, finally found what would be the game winner as Whitney Jackson took advantage of a misplayed ball and fired a missle by the diving Cardone for the 1-0 lead with five minutes remaining.

The Crusaders were able to regain and maintain possession to run out the clock and earn the road conference win.

A trio of freshman led the offensive attack led by three from Jamie Vargas and two from both Ariel Mansholt and Alli Moff. Senior Malorie Lara also added two shots on the day.

Southwetsern falls to 0-9 overall and 0-6 in SCAC play as they moved into the second half of conference play beginning on Friday as they welcome in Austin College for 5 PM kickoff at Varsity Field.
