Millican scores game winner to defeat Ladies

GEORGETOWN, Texas – Mackenzie Millican, assisted by Krysta Maples, scored the game winning goal with under 12 minutes to play as Southwestern defeated Centenary 1-0 on Sunday afternoon.

Southwestern started the game strong with well-organized attacks and continued to press throughout the remainder of the period. Ultimately, however, their attacks were fruitless as the game remained scoreless at the break.

The second half was a much more even contest than the first, but the Pirates got the go ahead goal with 11 minutes remaining in the game. After numerous offside calls, Southwestern finally got their timing right as Krysta Maples played a beautiful through ball to Mackenzie Millican streaking toward the right post. Millican confidently put the ball past Cullen in goal to put SU up 1-0.

Centenary searched hard for the equalizer, but were unable to get one past the tough SU defense as the final whistle blew to hand the Pirates a 1-0 win.

Southwestern led 14-4 in shots and 4-2 in corner kicks while Katherine Rodgers was not even tested in goal as she recorded zero saves. Her counterparts posted four saves on the afternoon.

Southwestern improves to 4-8-1 on the year and 4-2 in the SCAC while Centenary falls to 1-10-0 overall and 0-5 in conference action. The two teams will turn around and square-off again in Shreveport, La. on Sunday at 2 p.m.
