Pirates earn double overtime tie in great defensive effort

GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Pirate women's soccer team took the field for the third time in five days, facing Concordia University at home on Tuesday night and Katherine Rodgers and the Pirate defense fended off the Tornados for a 1-1 tie.

Southwestern came out firing, launching two shots in the first two minutes just wide of frame. Concordia quickly responded, however, and took the lead in the 18th minute on a goal by Jordan James, assisted by Alex Price.

The Pirates had their chances throughout the half, but Concordia's keeper Megan Frontiera made two outstanding saves from point blank range to keep Southwestern scoreless at the half.

SU led 6-5 in shots but didn't have a corner opportunity while the Tornados had two.

Less than ten minutes into the second half Southwestern evened the count with a beautifully executed offensive attack. Sarah Bevins started the sequence, playing the ball down the sideline to Audry Helburn. Helburn ran down the ball and kept it in bounds and, after one touch into space, sent a lofting cross into the eight yard box. Kiara Morales was right where she needed to be as the ball was just out of back-up keeper Hila Hartom's reach and fell at Morales' feet. Her one touch tap into the back of the net brought the count to 1-1.

Concordia had numerous opportunities at goal, but Katherine Rodgers made incredible saves including a leaping save on a shot to the upper 90 with 13 minutes to play to keep the game tied.

Neither team was able to punch one home in the remainder or regulation or in either overtime as the game concluded in a 1-1 tie.

Southwestern trailed 15-9 in the shot count and 8-0 in corner kicks, but the real bright spot was Rodgers in goal who recorded nine saves including seven in the second half.

SU moves to 0-4-1 on the year while Concordia goes to 3-0-1 overall. Southwestern heads back out on the road to face UT Dallas on Friday night at 7 p.m.
